高旻寺——禅宗四大丛林之一

高旻寺是扬州寺院的代表,清代中叶的高旻寺建筑完备,规模宏大,皇帝临幸,名僧辈出,为其鼎盛时期。1982年高旻寺被列为汉族地区重点开放寺庙之一。

从扬州乘船到瓜洲,途经三汊河,相传此为九龙佛地,所以从隋代起即有人在此建寺,屡兴屡废,到清顺治年间时,漕运总督吴惟华因扬州频遭水灾,赐地建寺。四年后,又在此建成天中塔,庙亦为天中寺。康熙三次南巡时,因为皇太后祝福,略加修葺,四次南巡时曾登临该塔,极顶四眺,南眺镇江诸北,北望蜀岗诸寺,有高入天际之感,于是书额赐名“高旻寺”,“旻”意即“天”,极夸该寺直入云霄,高入天际。至今康熙手中的“敕建高旻寺”汉白玉石额仍存。而院中现存的四个旗杆墩,青石所制,厚重工稳,雕镌细致,由此可以推断当时接驾的场面。因康熙曾在此驻跸,为感圣恩,两淮盐商、普通百姓纷纷捐款修造梵庙,规模越来越大。其后康熙又曾赐金佛一尊于寺,曹寅又在该寺之西建行宫,康熙五、六两次南巡,乾隆的六次南巡都曾在此驻跸。该寺获如此殊荣,于是大兴土木,最盛时,除一般庙宇应有的大山门、大殿、禅堂外,还有无梁殿、金佛殿、御书楼、御牌坊、禅堂、客舍、僧寮、斋堂等。不仅成为扬州八大名刹之首,而且与镇江金山寺、常州天宁寺、宁波天童寺合称我国佛教禅宗的四大丛林。 

 
高旻寺的天中塔

该寺建筑活泼轻灵,构成曲折幽深的空间,幽雅而又含蓄,实际上是佛教建筑形态的民居化、花园化,世俗情态格调逐渐代替了宗教神秘色彩。新建的禅堂,现存的老禅堂、念佛堂、藏经楼、西楼、水阁凉亭、寮房各抱地势,高低错落,自得天趣。

一楼一阁都造得奇,隐得巧,山光岚影恰到好处,梵音晨钟点到人心。寺外运河水泊,涟漪平缓,微波荡漾,殿宇倒映湖中,衬以白云蓝天,嘉木葱笼,其秀丽、恬静、明洁、灵秀,何景能比?高旻寺近期修复的大殿完全采用皇家宫殿的建造方式,高30米,面积为1320平方米,殿亭的基座为花岗岩的须弥座,很为厚重。殿宇气势宏大,雕梁画栋,金钩彩绘。 

大殿内中为佛祖,手持莲花,这是沿用佛经故事,因佛祖曾拈花示意,唯有弟子迦叶点头知道其祖所想所愿。佛像身后为88佛,旁站弟子二人,年轻的为目犍连尊者,他被称为神通第一;年老的为舍利弗尊者,他被称为智慧第一。三尊像皆泥塑装金,金光灿烂。东西两厢的18罗汉则用彩塑,造型生动,极富个性,有文有武,有老有少,人物的喜怒哀乐和他们的性格特征,刻画得细腻传神,富有浓郁的生活气息,完全是世俗化的佛像。另外缅甸洞缪观音寺住持惟静法师赠送立、卧玉佛各一尊,使古刹增添了不少光彩。 

高旻古刹一支香,高旻寺的出名在于“坐禅”,亦称“坐香”,即坐禅以香计。近期为此修禅堂两座,堂高18米,呈不等边八面体近圆结构,内部周边皆为禅床,中间供佛像,打禅时人人面向中间佛祖。据说康熙皇帝南巡驻跸高寺,也到禅堂“坐香”凑热闹,由于未能心注一境,被手执“巡香板”的下座打了一香板,这位皇帝才稍稍静下心来打禅。扬州是多塔之区,因用材不同有石塔、砖塔、砖木混合塔;外观上有圆形、四方、六面、八面不同;因地理环境和历史发展的区别,形成了单层、密檐、楼阁式、喇嘛式多种塔形。高旻寺的天中塔近日建成,塔9层,高72米,呈八角形,供72尊玉佛。

清代时,有人曾诗赞此塔:“宝塔一层灯一层,灯光直上天光下。一更二更灯初红,照见隔水清芙蓉。十里五里灯尚见,明星隐约疏林中。”确是写出了塔的壮观,但毕竟有诗无塔,只能使人发思古之幽情,而今我们却旧迹复建,且增其旧制,当是十分令人欣慰的。
