After DDM broke ground for the first phase of construction in 1993, Master Sheng Yen shared with his followers his ideas for the “Three Types of Education”[87] in 1994 through academics (circle B), through public outreach (circle C), and through caring services (circle D)。 Through the “Three Types of Education,” it comes to extend lots of mental cultivating methods, to build the bridges to the pure land one after another, to lead more and more people get together on the way of learning and practicing Dharma。 Within the conjunction center of these three circles, that is “Chan Meditation Education” as the cornerstone of the “Protection of The Spiritual Environment” (part A)。

Regarding to the academic education, Master Sheng Yen envisions the site to be the future world center for Buddhist education which includes school of liberal arts, Sangha University (including Buddhist department, Chan department, and “the Postulant Training and Monastic Formation Program”), Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist College (provide bachelor and master degrees), The Chung Hwa Instutute of Buddhist Studies, and International Conference Center for Buddhist studies, International Chan Meditation Center for intensive Chan meditation retreats (including the practice of extended solitary retreat) and Dharma Drum University for general education。 The institutional plan and proposed curricula are the idealized embodiment of Master Sheng Yen’s own life experience, reflecting his tribulations as a young monk in mainland China, his training under Dongchu, his solitary meditation in southern Taiwan, his years of graduate study in Japan, his teachings in the west countries, his advocacy in international conferences, and his interactions with other religions leaders。 The major approaches of the Education through Public Outreach are traditional Buddhist practices and contemporary cultural events, to expand the influence of Buddha-dharma to the general public and social customs in various living and practical paths。 The approaches lead the public starts to change behavior from the heart and life, from tiny to great goodness, from individual to whole society。 Encompassing a whole array of programs and activities includes Chan meditation, Buddha name recitation, Dharma lectures, Dharma assemblies, study groups, Chan meditation classes, Chan retreats, Spiritual Environmental Protection Camps, Bodhisattva precept transmission, blessing and taking refuge ceremonies, Buddhism classes, and the Eight-form Moving Meditation classes。 By publishing and media, make the teachings of Buddha-dharma in purifying the minds of the general public and become the guidance of modern people。 Education through Caring Services means caring for all members of society equally and universally through Humanistic Buddhism。 Caring for all stages of human life, from pregnancy, infancy, childhood, teenage, youth, adulthood, to old age, end of life and eventual death, as well as the many aspects of each of the stages, all fall within the scope of Education through Caring Services。 Now, it’s continuing to undergo the Fivefold Spiritual Renaissance Campaign, end-of-life caring and praying, Social Welfare and Charity, Psychological Reconstruction after disaster…etc。 “The Gate of Nondualism” of Dharma Drum Mountain to achieve building the pure land on earth, is base on the core idea of the “Spiritual Environment” for practitioners to embody “when the mind is pure, the Buddha land will be pure”, and on the approaches of “Three types of Education” for the practitioners and living beings to react in their daily life。
